Peter Nygard Gave 20 Plus Million to Cancer Awareness, Research And Eradication Projects

It is estimated that 15.5 million Americans with a history of cancer were alive on January 1, 2016, according to a 2018 report from the American Cancer Society. Cancer is a challenge encountered by many individuals in the world today, and it is one of the leading causes of death in both Canada and the United States.

The battle to eradicate cancer is one that Peter Nygard takes very seriously: “Breast cancer has been our major charity theme for 25 years. It’s a disease that affects our customers, so we will continue to fund research and development” (Peter Nygard).

So what does 25 years of giving add up to? More than 20 million dollars. Some business owners are known to be pretty philanthropic; however, Peter Nygard’s giving of twenty million dollars of profits to a cause on behalf of his company’s customers is really generous.

Archive pictures show that in 2003 alone Peter Nygard gave over a million dollars to cancer research and eradication. One picture shows a check for $650,000 being presented to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and another shows a check for $400,000 being presented to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

Here are some of the projects established, sponsorships given and organizations who received cancer-related donations from Peter Nygard.

-         Establishment of Nygard International Molecular Biology Breast Cancer Research Unit
-         Establishment of Manitoba Breast Tumour Bank
-         Establishment of an Endowment Fund
-         Breast Cancer Research
-         CancerCare Manitoba Foundation
-         National Breast Cancer Foundation
-         Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation
-         Run for the Cure
-         Mobile Mammography Unit

He funded a rural program aimed at reaching more people. Peter Nygard purchased a vehicle for a traveling mammography unit that goes out to remote areas in the Province of Manitoba to provide testing to those who might otherwise not have access. “Essentially, we’re there all the way from diagnosis to cure” (Peter Nygard).

Nygard also donated money raised through the sales of his popular SLIMs line and fashion show tickets over the years. One of Peter Nygard’s most recent donations was at his 50th Anniversary gala night, where he donated $100,000 for breast cancer research, which he does every year.

Since Peter Nygard adopted breast cancer eradication as his cause of choice, he has donated more than 20 million dollars to this effort.

For his generosity and partnership on projects for cancer awareness, cancer research and cancer eradication, Peter Nygard has received numerous awards from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and other organizations.

7 Things We Can Learn About Peter Nygard From His Giving

It’s one thing for individuals to donate a few hundred here and a few hundred there to a cause; but when you get to the point of donating millions of dollars to various causes that says a whole lot about who you are.

So, who do you have to be to give generously of yourself the way Peter Nygard does? We’ve learned 7 core things about who Peter Nygard is from his perpetual giving to individuals in need of medical treatment, athletes in need of sponsorship and various other causes to improve their lives.

1 - We’ve discovered that Peter Nygard truly has a kind heart. There are hundreds even thousands of beneficiaries of Peter Nygard’s giving over his lifetime. For the many individuals who’ve benefitted as a result, they likely agree with William Shakespeare who said, “A good heart is worth gold.”

2 - Peter Nygard wants others to be able to achieve their dreams. His commitment to helping others live their dream and achieve success suggests a lack of jealousy and selfishness.

3 - Peter Nygard doesn’t discriminate in his giving. ‘Ask and it is given.’ As long as it’s a true cause and a true need, he gives.

4 - At the same time, Peter Nygard doesn’t always wait to be asked. He sees the need and he steps in to help.

5 - Peter Nygard believes that others should be able to benefit from his wealth. While many wealthy people give, few give to the tune of millions. We know from Nygard’s story as a poor kid that sharing what he has is really important to him.

6 - Peter Nygard has a great ability to show empathy. He empathizes with others and the pain they are going through. As a result, Peter Nygard will go to great lengths to help them avoid the pain and suffering in their lives, like paying a Mayo Clinic medical bill for cancer treatment for a mere acquaintance—treatment that can add up to more than one hundred thousand.

7 - There is no doubt that Peter Nygard is selfless. Any man that is prepared to give away tens of millions of dollars to various individuals and causes in a world so full of hate and meanness, is truly a selfless man. Peter Nygard thinks of how he can help others live improved lives just like he has had the opportunity to do.

Peter Nygard has selflessly given to many over the years like a number of athletes, community projects, the developmentally challenged, cancer eradication projects and treatments, and many individuals’ medical treatment. And that’s only the stuff we know about.

Albert Einstein said it best when he said, “The value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving.”

Helping Is What Peter Nygard Does, Ask Finnish Veterans

Like all Finns, Peter Nygard is a proud Finn, and every Finn has a right to be. As a whole, Finns
are known to possess a special quality that they call “sisu”, which is demonstrating resolve,
tenacity, a grit. Sharing a border with Russia, they’ve had to. Sisu has served them well
throughout their history.

Finland proved itself to be a tiny but mighty nation in its efforts to keep the Soviet Union at bay.
They repelled every attempt to subjugate them. How they managed it is impressive. An example
of one tactic this David used against the Soviet Goliath during the ‘Winter War’ was to use bed
sheets as a covering to blend in with the snow. Adept skiers, the Finn soldiers maneuvered
through the forests to successfully launch small attacks on the Soviet’s soldiers and their

Throughout all of the Finn-Soviet conflicts, the Soviet Union’s grasp remained elusive even with
the Soviets overwhelming numbers and equipment. And while Finland was not able to win any
outright, Finnish soldiers were able to deliver significant damage to the Soviet soldiers during
several of their battles. As a result, treaties were created to settle things, and a quiet uneasiness
followed the years of battles.

The Finns achievements were extraordinary, but there was a reluctance to publicly laud the Finn
soldiers’ successful efforts to keep the Soviets at bay. The Finns understood the risk of poking
the bear. While they were being cared for over the years, some Finnish veterans still felt
forgotten; that is until Peter Nygard stepped into the picture.

Though warned against any public displays, Peter Nygard wanted to celebrate the victorious
efforts of his compatriots in keeping Finland an independent nation. In 1994, Peter Nygard and
his Mom, Hilkka, returned to his birthplace for a visit. Wanting to find a way to pay homage to
the veterans of the Winter War in Finland, to show his gratitude for their service, Peter Nygard
invited a former Miss Finland to visit the war veterans’ home along with him.

An April 1994 Finnish newspaper article entitled “Peter Nygard and Tanja Vienonen visit the
War Veterans,” describes how veterans were teary eyed and touched at being remembered. Peter
Nygard communicated to them that he wanted to help in any way he could.

Following that visit Peter Nygard donated medical and electrical beds to the veterans’ home and
continued to give generously to various veteran causes in Finland over the years.

Peter Nygard is said to attribute his own success to the Finns successful fight for freedom and
references them in many of his speeches. As a result of his efforts to show appreciation to them,
the Finnish veterans love Peter Nygard and have recognized him with a number of awards to
show their appreciation.

This is yet another example of Peter Nygard’s generous nature to give wherever he can.

Helping is definitely what Peter Nygard does.

The inspiring story of Hilkka Nygard

Canadian Embassy Remained Open In Finland Thanks In Part To Peter Nygard

A good sign that someone is a genuinely kind person is that they always go above and beyond
the call of duty. Peter Nygard’s entire life is marked by him going above and beyond, doing
“more than one is required or expected to do” (Merriam-Webster).

This propensity to continuously help is ingrained in him. Peter Nygard only need hear that there
is a person in need or a situation in need of help and he steps in and steps up to assist. It’s exactly
what he did with Finland. While visiting Finland, Peter Nygard learned that there were plans to
close the Canadian Embassy. So he stepped in to help.

Award-winning Finnish reporter Rita Tainola interviewed Peter Nygard on one of his visits to
Finland. She reported that Peter Nygard was partly to thank for the Canadian Embassy in Finland
staying open and reported on his efforts to assist: “Sad news came a while ago when Canada said it will close its Embassy. ‘I did my utmost so that the Canadian government would not do it. I called the Canadian Prime Minister directly and the highest authorities, and I sent lots of letters. But Canadian Finns also did a great job as well as your Foreign Ministry.’ Nygard says. And so it happened that they did not close the Canadian Embassy.”

Peter Nygard grew up in Canada; yet he felt the need to extend himself to help his birth country
even though no one had asked him to. All of Nygard’s investments were in Canada and
elsewhere, but it didn’t matter to him. Helping is what Peter Nygard does.

Some investors and business executives tend to care only about issues that relate to their business
or that would help increase their profits. Not Peter Nygard. It is clear from the many
demonstrations of him going above and beyond to assist people in all sorts of areas, like sports,
like community development, like with cancer eradication, like education, and like with all sorts
of medical challenges, that he genuinely cares.

To top it off, Peter Nygard doesn’t just help within his local community, he helps on a global
scale with countries everywhere like with giving business loans in Asia and helping veterans in
Finland, and donating to cancer causes in Canada, and contributing to community development
and sponsoring athletes in The Bahamas.

It appears that going above and beyond the call of duty is Peter Nygard’s sense of duty.

Peter Nygard's unequalled civilian support of the military

On Friday, December 2 2005 @ a gala dinner and fashion show at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, Winnipeg's own cavalry regiment, the Fort Garry Horse formally recognized Peter Nygard for the leadership and support he has demonstrated toward the Canadian military by appointing him Honorary Captain to the legendary Fort Garry Horse Regiment and elected Senator to the Fort Garry Horse Regiment Senate

LCol Sabatier, Commanding Officer of the Fort Garry Horse regiment said "Mr. Nygard, your track record as a supporter of Canada’s serving soldiers and your willingness to share a visible affiliation with one of Winnipeg’s proud Reserve Regiments not only serves as an encouragement to my Regiment’s soldiers, but to the Canadian military as a whole … for the leadership and support you have shown towards the Reserves and our Regiment. We would like to also extend the offer to serve as a Senator and advisor to our Regiment, and future Commanding Officers within our Regiment, as your duties and time allow.

When presenting the Honorary Captain scroll Col Solar remarked "the awards are being presented based on Peter Nygard's unequalled civilian support of the military & his outstanding philanthropic humanitarian efforts." Mr. Nygard was humbled by the honour and graciously accepted both prestigious awards.

The Story Behind Peter Nygard’s Generous And Endless Giving

There are a number of really caring individuals in the world who give so much of themselves and/or share their wealth in generous ways. You can’t help but wonder what makes some people so giving and others, not so much.

Peter Nygard is known to be one of those individuals who is really kindhearted and giving. What makes Peter Nygard share so much of his wealth with others and where did it all begin?  The story is told that the Nygard family emigrated from Finland to Canada with very little. They had a rough start. Peter Nygard’s family’s first home was a former coal storage bin that was thirteen by fifteen feet. There was a coal stove in the center of the back wall that was used for cooking and staying warm. Next to it was a rusty barrel full of melting snow, most of the time, that was boiled and used for washing and bathing in a galvanized tub. And they had to use an outdoor toilet.

While there is no doubt that our lives are shaped by our experiences as kids, the same experiences of different individuals tend to impact each individual’s life differently. Peter Nygard’s experiences impacted him in a particular way. Clearly, Peter Nygard was poor during his childhood. However, the family managed to make great strides through hard work and determination, and Peter Nygard was able to rise above his initial circumstances.

When asked once about his tendency to give so much Peter Nygard told the following story: “As a boy, I had a friend whose parents owned a restaurant. One day I went with him to the restaurant. There were so many delicious smells. My friend put two slices of bread in the toaster.  I was so hungry; I just knew one of those slices was for me. When they were done, my friend buttered the first piece of toast and began eating it. I stood there trying to be patient, but my mouth was watering waiting for my toast. Then, he took the second slice out of the toaster. He buttered it. He took a bite, and then ate the whole thing. I was so disappointed. I never forgot that moment. I told myself, ‘Peter, if you ever have an opportunity to share your second piece of toast, you share your second piece of toast!’”

Over and over again, Peter Nygard has lived up to that commitment he made to himself all those many years ago. It is demonstrated in the many different causes he has given to over the years, like to athletes, medical funds and treatments, cancer research and eradication, community development, educational scholarships, etc. Cancer research and eradication alone has received more than twenty million dollars from Peter Nygard.

Many are really grateful to Peter Nygard for always being willing to share his toast.

Everyone Wants A Boss Who Gives Their Employees $10,000 Gifts, Like Peter Nygard

Imagine working for a company where the boss financially demonstrates how much he values his employees. It’s a rare thing to see, but if you worked at Nygard International with Peter Nygard, you got to witness it firsthand repeatedly.

Peter Nygard already has a reputation for being kindhearted and generous with all of his
associates who he’s helped with medical bills. In addition to that, he has shown his appreciation to associates with cold hard cash. Here’s what happened.

It was the morning of Peter Nygard’s company’s 35 th anniversary. He was giving a speech to employees of gratitude and appreciation for their support while on the road from near bankruptcy to the grand success the company had become thirty-five years later. Then he got to the end of his speech. The words that were to come next out of Peter Nygard’s mouth stunned the room: “Oh, by the way, those of you who’ve been with the company twenty years or more will find a little something extra on your bank accounts.”

There were a lot of blank stares and questioning looks among the staff. That changed to disbelief when it was said that those long-serving employees received an extra $10,000 each that payday. The joy was palpable and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.

Everybody was chatting excitedly and hugging the lucky employees. In show of their gratitude and appreciation for such a generous gift, and to share their joy, the lucky associates treated the rest of the staff to lunch.

The total amount Peter Nygard gave away that day was more than one million dollars. In fact, he said to his staff, “Thanks a million!” Very little work was done that day. The talk was all about Peter Nygard and how it was so wonderful to work for such a generous human being.

At Peter Nygard’s company’s 50 th anniversary celebration he repeated his generosity. Once again, he gave away $10,000 each to long-serving employees.

Who does that? What kind of person does it take to selflessly give of his earnings in such a way? A man known to be the kindest of persons with a most generous nature. That’s Peter Nygard! He ‘shares his toast’ with any and everyone, strangers and friends alike, because that’s who he is. And he does it over and over again.

In this case, not once, but twice Peter Nygard gave away more than a million dollars to show his appreciation to his employees. Everybody wants to work for a boss like Peter Nygard who ceaselessly demonstrates his gratitude to his staff.

Peter Nygard Always Engages In Random Acts of Kindness

While the mark of a man cannot always be detected from acts that are plotted out and carefully planned, it can definitely be determined from his random acts.

Peter Nygard is known to be generous when countless people request sponsorship, whether it’s for sporting sponsorships or medical emergencies or community events. He would always come through. However, what people don’t know is that Peter Nygard engages in many random acts of kindness.

One example of that was Peter Nygard paying for an individual’s cancer treatment after hearing that this individual, who he barely knew, had cancer. Many other instances happen with the associates within his company. Stories are not just told about how Peter Nygard paid for the medical treatment of his associates, but of this associate’s mother or that associate’s mother and other relatives of various associates.

A story is told about how a line employee received a surprising call one day from Peter Nygard while Nygard was abroad internationally. Nygard told the associate that he heard that his brother had multiple sclerosis. In his research, Peter Nygard had come across a new treatment for the disease and offered to pay for the associate’s brother to receive it.

Peter Nygard wasn’t just going to pay for the treatment. He paid for the airline ticket to travel to the country and the hotel and all the associated cost for the associate’s brother to get the treatment.  Who does that? Only the most generous and kindhearted of persons.

Another associate shared her experience with everyone at work for years about how Peter
Nygard helped her. Here’s what she described happened: “I’ll never forget about five years ago two weeks before Christmas. I got a phone call from Mr. Nygard from Milan, Italy. He said, ‘Rene I think I found a cure for your knee. I’ve already taken the procedure to make sure it works. It works.’

“My knee was so bad; I could hardly walk. Then I got a call from the travel office. The next thing I know, I am on my way to Italy, and the next day I had the procedure done.

When I think about it, I still can’t believe it. A couple of days after the procedure, I was able to walk and NO MORE PAIN! I remember seeing Mr. Nygard coming down the hallway and yelling at him, ‘I can walk. I have no pain!’

“Peter Nygard is the reason I feel great! I will never know how I can thank him for everything.

Mr. Nygard is also doing this for many other associates.”  These are just some of the many random acts of kindness Peter Nygard engages in.

Peter Nygard and his Mom Visit Finland

Lots of people who live in what’s referred to as the Western world, take a lot for granted in terms of the freedom that its citizens enjoy.

In a number of countries around the world, such freedoms are not a given, especially in communist countries. Individuals born in these countries and nearby are always aware of this fact, including fashion mogul Peter Nygard.

As he once stated, “When I walk through my business and the places that I have, I say, ‘my God, are you ever a lucky guy’. Am I ever lucky that I was born in Finland instead of Estonia, that I was born on the right side of the Iron Curtain.”

In 1994, Peter Nygard and his Mom, Hilkka, returned to his beloved Finland for a visit. He wanted to find a way to pay homage to the veterans of the Winter War in Finland, to show his gratitude for their bravery and Sisu spirit that allowed them to stop the Russians and allowed Finland to maintain its independence.

Peter Nygard’s Promise To His Mom Inspired Health & Fitness Transformation

In 2009, Peter Nygard went on a quest that would become a defining moment in his life. The
quest was that of a son driven to find every way possible to improve his mom’s health and
extend her life.

Peter Nygard’s mom, Hilkka, had some health issues but nothing seriously life threatening at the
time. However, when she went into the hospital to have the battery in her pacemaker changed,
there was a series of complications that threatened her life.

That began the unexpected journey to new discoveries for Peter Nygard. The road led to an
exploration of stem cells. It was a long one of frantic outreach. However, Peter Nygard was able
to act quickly and get the right doctors lined up with the right facility to perform a procedure that
had a high probability of saving his Mom’s life. The surgery was scheduled.

The day before the surgery, Peter Nygard was at his Mom’s bedside. Hilkka had a message for
him. She asked her son to make her a promise. “Promise me,” she said. “Promise me that you
will take all that you have discovered and use it on yourself.” Nygard told his Mom that he was
focused on her right now and helping her to get better, but she insisted. “Promise me,” she
repeated. And he did.

Maybe Hilkka Nygard realized it was too late for herself when she begged her son to promise to
use his discoveries on himself. She died that same day never having made it to the surgery
scheduled for the next day.

Naturally, Peter Nygard and his family were devastated by the loss of the matriarch of their
family. He felt there was no better way to honor his Mom than to live up to his promise. So Peter
Nygard got to work on transforming his own health.

Before 2009, Peter Nygard had a ‘pot-belly’ and was not at his best fitness wise. He eliminated
certain things from his diet: white carbs, resaturated oils, bottled or packaged sodas or food. He
began taking supplements and established a daily workout routine. The results were that Peter Nygard went from 215 pounds down to 190 pounds, from 24% body
fat to 12%, and turned 35% fat to muscle.

Given Peter Nygard’s generous nature, he didn’t keep this to himself. He made it possible for all
the associates in his companies to become healthier and more fit also. Every NYGARD location
became equipped with a state of the art gym for associates to use. And each of the cafeterias
were mandated to only serve healthy meals.

A promise to a mom led to a transformed Peter Nygard. And NYGARD associates were also

Peter Nygard Sponsors Bahamian Athletes and Sports Organizations With Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars

Bahamian Boxer Tureano Johnson isn’t the only athlete to have benefited from the benevolence of Peter Nygard. There are countless athletes, especially within The Bahamas, who were recipients of sponsorship and donations from Peter Nygard over the years.

As The Sports Magazine, Bahamas (June 2013) expressed, “There is no other person in these islands who have done so much for our sporting community than Peter Nygard.” The publication’s article, “Peter: Sports Contribution Spans 20 Years”, goes on to explain that Peter Nygard is committed to establishing The Bahamas as a dominant power in sports internationally.  In fact, it states that the history of The Bahamas in sports has been re-written and there is no question that Peter Nygard played a very integral part in it.

Credited with supporting the achievements of many athletes in The Bahamas, Peter Nygard is highly regarded for his unselfish giving in not just contributing to athletic development in The Bahamas but in rewarding the Olympic gold medalists athletes in The Bahamas (the 2000 women’s 4 x 100 meter relay team and the 2012 men’s 4 x 400 relay team).

Here are just some of the specific gifts among many that Peter Nygard gave to athletes in The Bahamas over the years:
  • $100,000 to a 2000 sports fund in The Bahamas
  • $25,000 to the Golden Girls
  • $10,000 to Golden Knight Chris “Fireman” Brown
  • $10,000 to Golden Knight Michael Mathieu
  • $10.000 to Golden Knight Ramon “Fearless” Miller
  • $10,000 to Golden Knight Demetrius Pinder
  • $10,000 to Men’s National Volleyball team

As to why Peter Nygard gives so much to athletes, in a Bahama Journal article, “Nygard’s Golden Jubilee Review – ‘His Contribution To The Athletes Is Monumental’”, Peter Nygard was quoted from a radio interview in which he explained his motivation: “I have been an athlete nearly all of my life. My ambition was to be a track and field athlete when I was growing up. I am so close to the world of athletics, and when I saw this tremendous skill level here [The Bahamas]; the genes that we have here per capita is perhaps one of the best in the world. It just gave me such a thrill to live vicariously through these athletes—the Golden Girls, the Golden Knights, Volleyball players and Boxers. It didn’t matter which athletes came; I was their supporter.”

Peter Nygard’s benevolence has been demonstrated not just with Bahamian athletic associations but many other causes in The Bahamas to the tune of millions.

creating such an inviting culture that associates feel like family in the workplace.

How Peter Nygard’s Gift To A Stranger Saved The Man’s Life

Can you imagine simply living your life with all its joys and challenges, and in one moment, your world is irrevocably turned upside down? Hearing a doctor’s pronouncement that you have cancer is one of the most devastating experiences any individual can have. That’s what happened to Carlos Mackey of The Bahamas.

Discovering that you have an illness that has a high chance of killing you is one devastation. Discovering that the cost to save your life averages $150,000 (based on AARP estimates) is another. How do you save yourself without the means to pay for it? That’s where the compassionate Peter Nygard stepped in.

Carlos once told the story of how he briefly met Peter Nygard, but following that, the minute Peter Nygard heard that Carlos had cancer, Nygard jumped into action.

Imagine that. You are in the midst of the worst time of your life, and a man barely known to you, named Peter Nygard, comes to your rescue. Carlos explained that Peter Nygard gave him a time and a date to show up at the Mayo Clinic. When Carlos showed up at the Clinic and was being registered, he was asked who would be paying for treatment. Carlos said he was at a lost as to how to respond.

Then he saw him. Peter Nygard walked in at that perfect moment. Peter Nygard announced that he would be paying for the treatment. Carlos reports that Peter Nygard told the staff that Carlos was his brother and should be well taken care of.

He was in awe. Here is this man that barely knew him prepared to pay for cancer treatment to save his life. What also blew Carlos’ mind was that no only was Peter Nygard paying for his cancer treatment, Nygard sat in the waiting room and waited for his surgery to be over.

Carlos Mackey is forever grateful to the kindest of individuals who stepped into his life to save him, that is Peter Nygard.

What a gift to have the opportunity to extend your life through cancer treatment and not to have to go bankrupt to do it. The thing is that this is only one of countless stories of how Peter Nygard has helped individuals pay for much needed medical treatment.

What does it take to help a stranger to the tune of hundreds of thousands have a second chance at life? It takes a level of compassion and a kind heart that cannot be denied like that of the most benevolent Peter Nygard.
