Most people talk about Peter J. Nygård, Chairman of NYGÅRD (International), in terms of his classic rags-to-riches story – the Finnish immigrants' son, who stitched up an empire out of women's clothing and is now the quintessential self-made man. This story overlooks another side of Peter Nygård – a hard driven man who has created a standard of excellence for the Canadian Women’s Fashion Industry
Who gives away millions of dollars of their wealth? Very few individuals. However, one of the few is fashion mogul Peter Nygard.
Yes, he has given more than 20 million dollars to the eradication of cancer and to celebrating the lives of cancer survivors, but he has also given hundreds of thousands of dollars to causes in his second home country, The Bahamas.
In a Peter Nygard 50th Anniversary television interview with JCN’s CEO, Wendall Jones, on JCN in Nassau, Bahamas, Nygard was asked a series of questions about his success and his generosity.
Jones said to him, “You spent a considerable amount of money sponsoring various teams for several of the Olympic Games. You sponsored Boxing, Volleyball and all the rest of it. Why did you do it? Why did you think you had to do it?”
Nygard responded, “Because I could. Because I wanted to. Because it was a measurement of my success. My measurement of my success was not about how much money I made. My measurement was about how I spent that money, how I used that money.
If you want to take your success to the next level, it requires doing more than what everyone else is doing.
Everyone knows that to be successful in business—or anything for that matter—it takes a vision, commitment, hard work and determination. These are only the basics. It takes these and that much more. Because, there’s success and there’s success.
In everything that fashion mogul Peter Nygard does, he begins with basic success and then ‘10-times’ it. It’s how he got the world to take notice and how he became a leader in the fashion industry.
Fashion industry writer, Jenny Park, stated in an article about how to be successful in the clothing industry that you have to not just be a designer but also an entrepreneur and you have to engage in continuous product development.
These are just two of the factors that Peter Nygard used to 10-times his multi-million-dollar success. He wears both his entrepreneur hat and his designer hat very well.
To succeed in business, you have to start by getting rid of the myth that successful people are the most talented people. Though talent is defined as “a special natural ability or aptitude” or “capacity for achievement or success,” (dictionary.com)having talent in a particular area can be developed or acquired.
What’s more important is your approach to business, as can be seen in fashion mogul Peter Nygard’s example.
When Nygard made an $8,000 investment in a clothing business, he was only twenty-six years old. He had a strong business sense, and in fact, had helped his previous employer grow their business substantially. However, Nygard didn’t know anything about the apparel business.
To complicate matters, his business partner and mentor died before being able to train him. For Peter Nygard, it was either sink or swim.

Being realistic can be overrated in business. Just ask fashion mogul Peter Nygard. Being realistic was never a part of his thinking. That factor alone has allowed him to bring about amazing accomplishments in his life.
During the 2008 recession, Peter Nygard decided he would opt out. In fact, in 2009 he took out a billboard ad near his New York headquarters in Time Square. It read, “We decided not to join the recession. Our increase is over 25%”.
How is this possible in the midst of a recession? Well, simply put, you don’t focus on the problem. You insist on finding a solution.
In an article by an award-winning Finnish reporter, Rita Tainola, who interviewed Nygard, she wrote, “Business tycoon Peter Nygård has increased his net sales in the midst of the recession. He is, however, pessimistic about the worldwide recovery…. This businessman is doing fine while the rest of the world is coughing.”
What does it take to achieve the levels of success that fashion mogul Peter Nygard has experienced? Can just anyone do it? Achieving success is one thing, but being beloved by your town, your city, your country is something else entirely. Nygard managed to accomplish both.
In the city of Winnipeg, located in Canada’s Manitoba Province, Peter Nygard’s success is very well known and his presence is widely felt even by visitors. Every individual flying into Winnipeg is greeted with a sign of Peter Nygard welcoming them to Winnipeg.
Fifty years ago, this Finnish Canadian parlayed an eight-thousand-dollar investment in a struggling fashion business into a fashion empire reported to be yielding hundreds of millions today.
